Apprenticeships unlocking potential for awards finalists

Apprenticeships unlocking potential for awards finalists

Apprenticeships

Finalists from across Scotland are in the running to be named Scotland’s Apprentice of the Year.

The vital role of businesses and learning providers will also be recognised when winners of the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards are announced during Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023, which takes place from 6 to 10 March.

Apprenticeships Unlocking Potential

Backed by employers across Scotland, apprenticeships deliver the skills learners, businesses and the economy need to flourish, and this will be celebrated during the week.

The national campaign has been launched with the theme ‘Unlocking Potential’ and will provide a platform for the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards to recognise effort.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week will highlight the support people and employers get to flourish through apprenticeships and show how work-based learning is supporting sustained employment, upskilling and economic growth.

Employers, schools, learning providers, local authorities and industry organisations will host activities and events to demonstrate how apprenticeships are unlocking potential to create resilient learners and deliver the skills individuals, employers and the economy need.

Co-ordinated by Skills Development Scotland and supported by the Scottish Government, the campaign from 6 to 10 March will also see apprentices and employers honoured at the 21st Scottish Apprenticeship Awards.

Categories throw a spotlight on Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprentices as well as employers who have helped them to succeed in another challenging year.

Apprentices and employers working hard to support Scotland’s climate change ambitions and target of net zero emissions by 2045 will also be recognised.

Contenders across Scotland from Orkney to the Borders have made the shortlist, and one talented nominee will be crowned the nation’s Apprentice of the Year.

Apprenticeships vital to economic success

Around 43,000 individuals are benefiting from work-based learning through apprenticeships, with Scottish Government committed to the creation of at least 25,000 more apprenticeships within 2022/23.

Minister for Higher and Further Education, Youth Employment and Training Jamie Hepburn said: “Apprenticeships and work-based learning enable both individuals and employers to unlock their potential. They also play a central role in progressing the Scottish Government’s ambition to develop one of the most productive, inclusive and sustainable economies in the world.

“The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards are an important opportunity to recognise the impact of apprentices, their employers and supporters across the length and breadth of the country.”

Chair of Skills Development Scotland, Frank Mitchell, said: “Designed by industry, for industry, apprenticeships not only help the economy but also open access to jobs for many young people from areas that traditionally restricted opportunities to progress. These are real jobs, backed by employers who contribute £10 for every £1 spent by Government, and at the same time apprentices also contribute by paying their taxes.

“Creating a diverse and inclusive workforce through work-based learning is benefiting businesses and Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a time for employers investing in apprenticeships to showcase how apprentices are enabling them to adapt and sustain their businesses.

“The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards will recognise the individual and collective impact of apprentices across sectors and shine a spotlight on the inspiring organisations and individuals who champion work-based learning.”
