Paralympian Robyn and basketball career chat

CIAG Scotland's career services

Paralympian Robyn Love joins Joe and Carrie for the latest episode of Career Stories. The Team GB and Team Scotland wheelchair basketball star chats about her journey to the top of her game and the lessons learned along the way.

Robyn talks about her school-dream of being a P.E teacher, then pivoting to biomedical science before finding her way to trying out for wheelchair basketball. She also talks candidly about her disability and how it created, rather than stymied, opportunities for her in life and her career.

Following leg lengthening treatment and some less-than-encouraging advice from a doctor, it was Robyn’s teachers at Kyle Academy who made sure she followed her passion for physical education and sports. Robyn highlights how easy it is to focus on negative feedback but how much more valuable it can be to develop resilience and self-belief. This has also helped in her role as an ambassador for Athlete Ally where she shares her story to inspire other LGBTQ+ athletes both disabled and non-disabled.

Robyn is also a new mum and chats about how her and her wife (and teammate!) Laurie have balanced being new parents to their daughter, Alba, while also training for major tournaments like the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships. Crucial to this, she explains, is the community they have around them, which allows Robyn to not only train but earn extra income as an event speaker.
