New plan for Tayside sets ambitious agenda for regional growth

Skills planning

An action plan to help the workforce of the Tay Cities region benefit from Scotland’s rapidly-changing economy has been launched.

Developed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) alongside partners including local authorities, colleges, universities and local industry, the Tay Cities Regional Skills Action Plan focuses on the skills needs of the people and employers of Dundee, Angus, Perth & Kinross and the north-east area of Fife.

The plan offers an original and unified strategy for how the region can develop the workforce it needs to prosper in the global economy, deepening collaboration between partners to harness strengths and address key challenges.

The plan is focused around three main pillars or activity:

  • building skills for future growth

  • supporting job entry and progression

  • securing the future workforce.

Behind each pillar lies a programme of activity covering the next four years which aims to further develop the conditions for attracting investment, creating jobs and promoting inclusive growth.

By focusing on improving infrastructure, expanding digital connectivity, and fostering innovation in education and business, the plan aims to position the Tay Cities region as a dynamic leader in Scotland’s economic development.

Simon Hewitt, Principal of Dundee & Angus College said: “The Tay Cities Regional Skills Action Plan provides a clear and ambitious framework to ensure that our regional economy has the talent, innovation and resilience needed to prosper in the years ahead.

“Dundee & Angus College is proud to be a core partner in this work, helping to translate strategic intent into tangible action that supports individuals, communities and employers.

“Through close collaboration with Skills Development Scotland, local authorities, universities and local industry, we are aligning our curriculum, investment and infrastructure plans to the region’s emerging economic priorities, from digital transformation and health innovation to green and sustainable industries.

“As a civic anchor institution, the College is deeply committed to driving inclusive growth, supporting fair work and ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to thrive. The Regional Skills Action Plan strengthens that shared mission and sets out a unified approach to building a vibrant, skilled and future-ready Tay Cities Region.”

Consultation with employers identifies recruitment as the number one challenge of the region. Employers also highlighted concerns about the work-readiness of those entering the labour market.

Ronnie Palin, Regional Skills Planning Lead at SDS added: “The plan illustrates the opportunities that exist in the Tay Cities regional economy in sectors such as life sciences, health, digital technology, tourism, hospitality, and green industries.

“To grasp those opportunities will involve giving everyone in Tay Cities to the chance to develop their skills, embrace lifelong learning, and secure meaningful, fair, and rewarding work, helping the businesses of the region to maximise their potential.

“Realising that ambition will require deep and continued partnership working across all sectors of the economy.”
