Apprenticeship Approvals Group

From October 2019, the process for approving new and reviewed apprenticeships will begin transitioning towards the new Apprenticeship Approvals Group (AAG).

AAG will be responsible for the approval of all Scottish Apprenticeships including Foundation and Graduate apprenticeships.

The move to one group for the whole apprenticeship family will ensure consistent standards are applied across all standards and frameworks.

From 31st March 2020 Apprenticeship Approvals Group (AAG) will approve all Frameworks and Standards and MAG will be dissolved.

Apprenticeship Approvals Group terms of reference

The Modern Apprenticeship Group (MAG) is an independent group which draws its authority from the Scottish Government.

Members of the group include representatives from key stakeholders involved in the management and delivery of the Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme in Scotland.

The group is responsible for the approval and de-approval of all Scottish frameworks and encourages Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) to develop robust frameworks with high participation and completion rate. Frameworks should also respond to the needs of their sector in changing economic circumstances and priorities.

Members of the group are drawn from the following organisations:

  • Scottish Government (Chair)
  • Skills Development Scotland (SDS)
  • College Development Network
  • Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Accreditation
  • Scottish Training Federation
  • Scottish Trades Union Congress
  • SSC Qualifications Group

Further information on the constitutional members of MAG and the remit, practices and regulations of the group can be found in the MAG Constitution and Annex.
