Skills for Health is the Sector Skills Council for the Health Sector and has developed Modern Apprenticeships at two levels to support the Pharmacy sector in Scotland.

Most employees in the sector are employed by community (retail) pharmacies and within hospital settings in NHS Scotland. Smaller numbers are employed in the pharmaceutical industry, private hospital HM Prisons and armed forces.

Framework details

  • SVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services. Dispensing and Pharmacy Assistants undertake a wide variety of roles within the pharmacy. These include: the sale of over-the-counter medicines, the provision of information to customers on symptoms and products, prescription receipt and collection and ordering, receiving and storing of pharmaceutical stock.
  • SVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services. Pharmacy technicians prepare, supply and dispense a wide variety of medicines and products prescribed for patients. They are an essential part of the Pharmacy team and work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in order to provide medicines for patients in a safe and correct manner.

SVQ's in both Level 2 and Level 3 frameworks extended until 30th September 2016.
