Cogent is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Nuclear, Oil and Gas, Petroleum and Polymer Industries.
The Chemicals, Manufacturing and Petroleum Industry in Scotland is a significant part of the economy, with companies ranging from huge multi-national, organisations like INEOS and GlaxoSmithKline employing several hundred people in Scotland alone, to a few small independents.
Employees in the industry are involved with the basic process of transforming raw materials into useful chemical products, using highly technical and sometimes hazardous process. The products include synthetic resins like polypropylene and polyethylene, soaps and toiletries, agro-chemicals, industrial gases and pharmaceuticals.
Cogent has developed a Modern Apprenticeship to support the skills needs of the industry in Scotland.
