QA is the UK’s leading tech talent and training organisation, helping individuals and companies to be winners in the digital revolution.

In the 10 years since we recruited our first IT & Telecoms Modern Apprentice, we have recruited and upskilled over 6,000 learners across all of Scotland and have partnered with over 1,900 employers.

We have a proven track record in helping to deliver a wide range of IT and Digital skills training at level 6 and 8 to learners from all backgrounds, cultural and social identities and levels of support needs.

Keeping apprentices on track online

Support for apprentices during the pandemic was vital to help keep them engaged in learning, even while furloughed, and importantly for the mental wellbeing of learners through regular contact.

Since March 2020, over 220 courses have been conducted using live classrooms, and our technology has allowed learners to ‘attend’ by logging on and accessing tutor led and self-paced learning from their homes.

Assessors have continued to support workplace reviews and assessments online, enabling learners to continue with their apprenticeships with no impact on the outcomes required for successful completion.

One of our customers, Harper MacLeod, states: “It was no surprise that QA were already on the ball with remote learning, this allowed our apprentices to continue with their learning whether they were on furlough or working from home. I am delighted to say that with all the hard work that QA put in place 8 of our apprentices were able to complete their MA qualification despite being in the middle of a pandemic.”

Employers adapting through apprenticeships

Understanding and supporting the use of technology has been a vital way for businesses to continue functioning during Covid-19.

Employers have a responsibility to their customers and employees to keep their businesses operating through the various pandemic lockdown phases where possible, and the ability to work remotely is a key driver in this endeavour.

One example is an employer who moved their entire sales force from face to face roles into an online operation, and a role for a Digital Marketing apprentice then became necessary to help with the online proposition through developing a website and online marketing collateral.

Addressing digital skills gap

Incentives like the Apprenticeship Employer Grant has proven to be extremely helpful to employers in supporting the recruitment and training of both new and existing talent to their workforce.

Investing in training and developing the existing and future talent of the country is essential in enabling the Digital Skills gap to narrow as we emerge from the restrictions.

As the largest provider of Modern Apprenticeships in IT and Digital technologies in Scotland, we are well placed to support the digital transition through recruitment and development of the current and future workforce of the nation.
