Young people across the length and breadth of Scotland took part in Skills Development Scotland’s (SDS) ‘Siuthad’ Gaelic careers events this week.

The virtual events showcased information on Gaelic careers and highlighted opportunities in sectors where having Gaelic skills is an advantage. Events targeted both fluent Gaelic speakers and those learning the language.

Siuthad events were opened with a virtual welcome from newly appointed Scottish Government Cabinet Minister for Finance and the Economy Kate Forbes, who is MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch.

Organisations and companies taking part included Argyll and Bute and Western Isles Councils, the University of Glasgow, Young Scot, Storlann, Education Scotland, the Crofting Commission, the Gaelic Book Council and MG ALBA.

“This year’s events follow on the success of our first virtual Siuthad last year and shows the interest in Gaelic and Gaelic careers across the country. It was tremendous seeing young people speaking the language and so keen to find out how it could be an integral part of their career plans and their future.”

SDS’s Gaelic Development Officer Derek MacKenzie

MG ALBA Communications Manager Murdo MacSween said: “The Siuthad careers events offer us the chance talk to students directly to showcase the opportunities in Gaelic. MG ALBA works across creative media including television, digital media and Gaelic learning platforms and it’s ideal that communicating through a digital event will help us find the next generation of Gaelic talent.”
