A Foundation Apprenticeship has helped Glenrothes teenager, Katie Young, discover the square-route to success.

The Auchmuty High School pupil chose an Engineering Foundation Apprenticeship in order to strengthen her future prospects with some practical work-experience.

Katie wasn’t sure whether she wanted to work in engineering or mathematics in the future.

Having thoroughly enjoyed her work placement with Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation’s Roads & Lighting Contracts team, she benefited from the opportunity to get a taste of the civil engineering industry before making her decision.

“The Foundation Apprenticeship is a great way to get work experience while working towards a qualification. I have four unconditional offers to study maths at university, this is thanks to my Foundation Apprenticeship. I enjoyed my Foundation Apprenticeship and decided that I’d like to go down a slightly different route in my career. That’s a great part of it – you can experience a workplace before deciding if it’s the career for you.”

Foundation Apprenticeships

Foundation Apprenticeships give young people in S5 and S6 the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification, at the same level as a Higher, alongside their other subjects.

This type of work-based learning also provides pupils with the opportunity to get real work experience – with Katie being given the opportunity to tackle her own project during her three-week placement.

The 16-year-old added: “I was out on site and I’d observe what everyone was doing. It was great to gain experience working on sites. I had my own work to do where I went out to look at a public path and had to find a way of improving its functionality.

Good for your CV

“A Foundation Apprenticeship is good for your CV and is a great method of progressing onto a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship.”

Fife Council Roads and Lighting Contracts Service Manager Mark Dewar believes Foundation Apprenticeships are vital in attracting “new blood” into the engineering industry.

He said: “Katie has been able to apply the theory she has learned in the real working world. Foundation Apprenticeships allow employers to recruit new talent and mould them into their business needs.”
