School pupil Izzac Fyall is calculating his route to the top thanks to his Accountancy Foundation Apprenticeship.

The 17-year-old chose a Foundation Apprenticehip with Forth Valley College as one of his fifth year school subjects.

Izzac, from Dollar, hopes that the valuable combination of attending school, college and a workplace can kick-start his ambition of a career in accountancy.

Advantage over others

Izzac said: “I found out about Foundation Apprenticeships through a school assembly. They spoke about all the skills you could learn in my field of Accountancy, so it really grabbed my interest.

“My Accounting Foundation Apprenticeship is well worth doing because it homes in on a certain career path that I’m interested in. I now have a basic knowledge of Accountancy which could provide me with an advantage over others in the same field.”

The Alva Academy pupil enjoys the independence which comes with choosing a Foundation Apprenticeship.

Support to achieve

However, he is also very grateful for the sterling support provided by Alva Academy, Forth Valley College and his family.

Izzac added: “The school and college have arranged travel for me to make things quicker and more accessible. My family think the Foundation Apprenticeship is great because it allows me to gain skills and relevant experience.”

Forth Valley College School Partnership Co-ordinator Ernie Romer has been involved with Foundation Apprenticeships since the second pilot and works with the Community of Practice Steering Group.

Workplace experience

Ernie believes that Izzac’s Foundation Apprenticeship is the perfect way to race ahead of the pack as he builds his career.

Ernie said: “You’ll not find anybody in the country who thinks Foundation Apprenticeships are more important than I do.

“Izzac will be going out on a week of placement so he can gain real workplace experience. This is a massive opportunity for him because not many accountancy firms would give young people the chance to spend a week there.

“Most businesses hiring Modern Apprentices want the qualifications that a Foundation Apprenticeship provides. Foundation Apprenticeships give young people an advantage over fellow school pupils.”
