Employers and learners are backing Graduate Apprenticeships to meet critical skills needs and to develop staff for the future.

Around 260 apprentices and almost 80 employers took part in the online survey form Skills Development Scotland.

Questions covered areas including why people choose a Graduate Apprenticeship; their satisfaction and experiences and benefits for individuals and employers.

The research was designed to inform future planning and the continued development of Graduate Apprenticeships.

The survey showed:

  • 87 per cent of employers took on Graduate Apprentices to develop current staff
  • 65 per cent of employers took on Graduate Apprentices to support and invest in their development
  • 56 per cent said they took on Graduate Apprentices to bring new knowledge and skills into the business

And 100 per cent of employers who responded said they would take on a Graduate Apprentice again.

Apprentices also showed high levels of satisfaction with their experience – with the survey showing:

  • 83 per cent of learners said they were satisfied with the Graduate Apprenticeship
  • 89 per cent would recommend a Graduate Apprenticeship to others

Diane Greenlees, SDS Director of Critical Skills and Occupations, said: “Across Scotland, more and more employers are turning to Graduate Apprenticeships to meet their critical skills needs.

“Looking towards a future increasingly disrupted by technological and societal changes, work-based learning has never been more relevant for supporting people and businesses to develop and retain the essential skills they need.”

“Graduate Apprenticeships are industry-led and backed by leading universities, ensuring businesses have access to high-level skills and providing both new and existing employees with the opportunity to get a job and get a degree.

“Looking towards a future increasingly disrupted by technological and societal changes, work-based learning has never been more relevant for supporting people and businesses to develop and retain the essential skills they need.”

Skills Development Scotland developed Graduate Apprenticeships in partnership with industry and the further and higher education sectors.

Graduate Apprenticeships are a new way for individuals to get qualified up to Master’s degree level whilst in full-time, paid employment.

They are designed by employers and offered in key sectors that need highly skilled employees.
