Teachers looking to inspire pupils for the future can tap into an online resource from Developing the Young Workforce and Skills Development Scotland.

Marketplace is the easiest way for teachers to get real industry experience and insight into their school and has also been given a refresh over the summer

The online platform, which is available through My World of Work, lets schools and colleges make contact with local employers to explore how they can work together to bring the curriculum to life.

Through Marketplace, employers can post a variety of opportunities, from skills sessions in schools, inspiration events at their premises or in-school talks at careers events, assemblies or parents’ evenings.

Teachers can then log in through their My World of Work account and search for opportunities based on their subject area, location and the outcome they want.

The employer will be notified that the teacher has expressed and interest, and they’ll get in touch to confirm a date and time.

New for this school year is access to speakers from Scotland’s Apprentice Network.

SAN is a network of apprentices, past and present, from all over Scotland who are passionate about work-based learning and keen to talk about the benefits of doing an apprenticeship.

The Network aims to have at least one member linked to every secondary school in Scotland – all 357 – so that every school can easily arrange a visit from an apprentice, whenever it needs to.

Apprentices will represent their employer and can give a positive account of their own industry, skillset and pathway into their apprenticeship. Members must receive employer endorsement to join the Network.

Visits from those in industry, from apprentices to company owners, can give pupils a better understanding of the world of work, and open their eyes to new opportunities.

Sessions organised through Marketplace can be particularly useful at key points in the year such as subject choices and on the lead up to leaving school.
