Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is supporting Skills Scotland shows taking place in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh during November.

Organised by Prospects Events, Skills Scotland brings pupils in their senior phase of school face-to- face with employers, training providers, colleges, universities and professional bodies.

Help to understand options

Free to attend, the events help young people understand all the pathways available to them, whether that’s further or higher education or just straight into the world of work through routes like apprenticeships.

There will also be early-evening sessions for parents, carers and teachers at each location, to find out more about the opportunities available to young people.

A team of SDS staff will be on-hand to provide information and support about career pathways to help pupils plan their future.

Advice from an apprentice

There will be the opportunity to discover the benefits of taking Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships, investigate entry requirements and look at live vacancies on apprenticeships.scot.

Pupils can find out more about the range of Foundation Apprenticeships available to take as a subject at school, alongside Highers and Nationals.

There will also be the chance to learn about employers providing work-based learning through Foundation Apprenticeships and how they can help with entry into a Modern Apprenticeship, college or university.

Pupils, teachers and parents will be able to visit the ‘Ask an Apprentice’ area to find out first-hand about what it is like to be an apprentice.

Experience through Virtual Reality

My World of Work Live! will be at the SDS stand demonstrating its Virtual Reality Kit, which immerses the user in a real work environment.

SDS will also host several interactive sessions showcasing My World of Work Live! as well as supporting The Apprenticeship Theatre, located next to the SDS stand.

SDS Director of Career Information and Guidance Operations, James Russell said: “Skills Development Scotland provides the national careers service in schools and from a network of high street SDS centres across the country.

“We help people to make the choices that are right for them.

“These events are a great chance for young people and their parents or carers to hear about careers and apprenticeships options.

“With Foundation Apprenticeships available at school, for example, there’s never been more work-based learning options for young people.”

Apprentices can get involved

If you are an apprentice keen to get involved with the event at Glasgow, Aberdeen or Edinburgh and willing to share your apprenticeship experience with young people at the SDS stand, please contact emma.milroy@sds.co.uk
