Skills Development Scotland’s (SDS) careers service scored top marks in a report from Education Scotland.

The review, published today (18 January), cited an area of excellent practice from SDS staff in the area, praising the use of the 16+ Data Hub by SDS colleagues and staff in the Education Department and secondary schools to target and support school customers. The teams were praised for recognising that the Data Hub, and the range of reports contained within it, is integral to ensuring that the right support is in place to help school customers prepare for their post-school destinations.

SDS provides free, impartial career information, advice and guidance for people of all ages across East Renfrewshire, with advisers working in the careers centre in Barrhead Foundry, all seven secondary schools in the local authority, and from a number of community locations.

Sharon Kelly, SDS Head of Operations West, said: “The Education Scotland review demonstrates the commitment and hard work that goes into delivering our career information, advice and guidance services across East Renfrewshire.

“I am extremely proud of colleagues working in the area, and I was delighted to see that Education Scotland highlighted our use of the Data Hub and the impact this has had on the Participation Measure and the overall School Leaver Destination results for East Renfrewshire.”

Maurice Gilligan, SDS Area Manager for Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, added: “I am extremely pleased with the outcome of the Education Scotland review and am delighted that the efforts of the team working across East Renfrewshire have been recognised.

“Our advisers work hard to ensure that people across the local authority have access to the best quality career information, advice and guidance, and I was delighted to see this being recognised by the Education Scotland review team.”

The report followed a week-long review process where Education Scotland assessors observed the work of staff based in the centre and local schools, as well as speaking with staff, customers and partner agencies about their experiences of SDS’s careers services.

The report highlights that the team works well with partners to respond to national strategies and priorities and that our offer to school leavers is well established in the area, resulting in positive progressions for customers, well above the minimum expected service delivery.

‘Management of service delivery’ was rated excellent and the review highlighted the contribution that colleagues in East Renfrewshire make to influence key strategic and operational groups within the area. The team’s excellent work with partners to respond effectively to national strategies and priorities was also recognised.

The team was also applauded for responding quickly and timeously to requests for additional support from schools with the report citing the work colleagues have undertaken with school partners to raise the levels of My World of Work Ambassadors and expand their roles to suit the needs of schools.
