Through engaging with Skills Development Scotland's (SDS) Next Steps programme, Aberdeen teen Liam has got his life back on track.

Half-way through S3, Liam became a non-attender at school. His school referred him on to the Foyer Futures team, a programme run by Aberdeen Foyer which helps young people rediscover lost aspirations.

Through Foyer Futures, Liam was supported to achieve his National qualifications in maths and English.

While still at school, Liam had met with his school careers adviser – and with his school leaving date approaching, decided to get back in touch with SDS for advice.

Liam got involved in SDS’s Next Steps programme, a service aimed at unemployed young people aged 16 to 18-and-a-half, or up to 25 if they are care experienced. Participants are entitled to intensive careers information, advice and guidance support to help them transition from school.

Over the summer, he met weekly with a work coach at SDS’s Aberdeen centre, and through discussion, reflecting on his skills, strengths and interests, he was able to identify a longer-term plan – to move into a bricklaying apprenticeship.

Working with Natasha at SDS helped me to improve my confidence and increased my belief that I can accomplish what I want to achieve. Natasha has helped me a lot with moving on.”

Through the support offered by the careers adviser, Liam became more aware of the areas that he needed to develop, particularly in terms of building his confidence and gaining work experience. Through discussion, he felt that training would be the most appropriate step for him.

Liam decided to apply for an Employability Fund programme. The Fund supports young people towards employment through a number of local training programmes.

In August, Liam got started on the Employability Fund Stage 2 course through Aberdeen Foyer, with a view to progressing to Stage 3.

Since getting started on the course, Liam has made great progress and is now feeling optimistic about his future.

Liam says: “Working with Natasha at SDS helped me to improve my confidence and increased my belief that I can accomplish what I want to achieve. Natasha has helped me a lot with moving on.”
