The new independent group aimed at ensuring Scottish Apprenticeships meet the needs of employers has been established.

The Apprenticeship Approval Group puts employers at the forefront and heralds a significant change in the governance of Scottish Apprenticeships.

It replaces the Modern Apprenticeship Group, widening its remit to now cover the full family of apprenticeships - Foundation and Graduate, as well as Modern Apprenticeships.

The group will work closely with the Scottish Apprenticeship Advisory Board (SAAB) Standards and Frameworks group.

Ruth Jennings of Sainsbury’s is Chair of the new Apprenticeship Approvals Group and a member of SAAB Standards and Frameworks Group.

"Increasing employer representation helps us deliver solutions that are agile and responsive to industry requirements: while holding the apprentice at the heart the programme will deliver a strong and productive workforce."

Ruth said: “This is a significant step forward for apprenticeships in Scotland.

“For employers, apprenticeships are a key talent development route to deliver colleagues with the skills for today and tomorrow. They help us have the talent to support our industry’s needs.

“Increasing employer representation helps us deliver solutions that are agile and responsive to industry requirements: while holding the apprentice at the heart the programme will deliver a strong and productive workforce.

“We look forward to delivering high quality, engaging and effective solutions across Scottish apprenticeships.”

The purpose of the Group is to ensure that Scottish apprenticeships meet the needs of employers and that they provide high quality learning opportunities to individuals.

The group met recently – following an inaugural meeting in November – to kick-start an analysis of how apprenticeships are developed, created and approved in Scotland. The meeting brought employers to the table along with previous apprentices and key organisations delivering and developing education and skills in Scotland – placing quality and transparency at the heart of Scottish Apprenticeships.

The Apprenticeship Approval Group will fully replace the current Modern Apprenticeship Group from April 2020 after the current transition phase where both groups run concurrently.
