A second event offering support to staff made redundant by the closure of Pinneys of Scotland in Annan is to be held in the town.

Taking place at the Victoria Halls Complex in Annan on Thursday, 4 October from 11.00am to 3.00pm, the follow-up event will offer advice on a range of topics to those affected by the closure, and will include local employers with vacancies to fill.

The event is open to anyone living in the area who is looking for work, and is organised by the Scottish Government’s initiative for responding to redundancy situations, Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE).

Employers in the region with vacancies to fill are also being encouraging to attend. The first support event held in July at the same venue attracted more than 200 people, with 20 employers on hand offering vacancies.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy Fergus Ewing is encouraging anyone in the area who is looking for work to attend October’s event.

He said: “Since the closure of Pinneys was first announced, Scottish Government has been working to offer a swift and comprehensive package of support to all of those affected through the PACE initiative.

“This response, including July’s event, has already helped a large of number of those affected to identify their next steps. This follow-up event is aimed at assisting the smaller number of people still in need of help to access the support available.”

Through providing skills development and employability support, PACE aims to minimise the time individuals affected by redundancy are out of work. Skills Development Scotland (SDS) leads on the delivery of PACE support in conjunction with a number of key partners including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Juliet Campbell, Regional PACE Chair for SDS, said: “Together with our partners we’ve made good progress in recent months, supporting those faced with redundancy from Pinneys to find alternative employment or access the support they need.

“It means there is now a smaller number of people requiring support, but this follow-up event will provide those needing it with the opportunity to access the range of services available, all in one place.

“We would also encourage anyone in the area who is looking for work to attend for advice on how to find work.”

As well as advice from SDS, help will be available from Job Centre Plus, Business Gateway, Dumfries and Galloway College, Scottish Enterprise, and Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Employers looking to take part in the event should contact caroline.low@sds.co.uk for more information.
