School pupils from across Edinburgh who volunteer as My World of Work Ambassadors are gathering for a day of training to enhance their skills.

Around 110 pupils are attending the event at Holy Rood RC High School following the success of a similar training day last year.

The event, which takes place on Tuesday 11 September will see volunteers learning more about their role as an Ambassador and about Scotland’s national careers web service, My World of Work.

Developed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in collaboration with schools, the My World of Work Ambassadors programme sees the pupils promote the resources available on My World of Work to others, while gaining valuable experience and skills that are transferable to the world of work.

Through a series of events and presentations across the academic year the volunteers will support fellow classmates to register for a My World of Work account, and help them to get the best out of the website.

There will be interactive sessions at parents’ evenings highlighting relevant resources and school events where they will work with peers and younger pupils to introduce them to the core tools including the Strengths tool and the Profiling tool. Sessions will also be run with teachers around the suite of career education resources available including Lesson Plans and Lesson Inserts – all co-created with teachers.

Talking about the event, Grant McDougall, Head of Region for the South East from Skills Development Scotland, said:

“We’re delighted to welcome our new and existing My World of Work Ambassadors to this event. It’s our ambition to have Ambassadors in every secondary school in Scotland to promote My World of Work and career management skills across the whole school therefore contributing towards delivery of national framework: Building the Curriculum 4, Developing the Young Workforce, the Career Education Standard and How Good is Our School 4 reviews.

“Every year the pupils and teachers involved bring fresh ideas and approaches, and devote great energy, to the project.”

Pupil Support Leader at Holy Rood RC High School, Fiona Forbes said:

The My World of Work ambassador programme in Holy Rood is very much valued in supporting our work to meet the aims of the Developing Young Workforce agenda. The programme allows our pupils to benefit from a range of opportunities that help to develop their Career Management Skills.

Our pupils have particularly enjoyed being involved with their peers and participating in whole school events linked to developing employability skills. As a school, we are delighted to be hosting the My World of Work ambassador training event again this year.

This collaborative approach offers pupils an opportunity to connect with other ambassadors across the city, further develop their skills to deliver the programme successfully and increase their confidence as well as enhance their personal development.

The Ambassador event is a great way to learn more about the programme, get new ideas and meet other Ambassadors.  Being a My World of Work Ambassador has helped me gain lots of skills and helped build my confidence.

The programme works alongside SDS Careers Advisers who are delivering career information, advice and guidance in every secondary school in Scotland.

SDS Partner Development & Integration Execs offer dedicated support to Ambassadors throughout the year, including training sessions, practical resources and support materials.

They also provide support to teachers leading the Ambassador programme within a school. Being involved contributes to the teachers’ continuous professional development, helps develop skills in leadership and project management, enhances their knowledge of career management skills and to provideopportunities for internal and external networking.
