Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018 has shown the benefits apprenticeships bring to individuals, employers and the economy.

The annual campaign, co-ordinated by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), saw events and activity from Shetland to the Borders promoting apprenticeships and the value of work-based learning.

Recognising the fundamental role employers play, the campaign theme was Apprenticeships are the Business.

SDS Chief Executive Damien Yeates thanked supporters who have backed the campaign across the country throughout the week.

Damien said: “The employers, apprentices and all those who support Scottish Apprenticeship Week are encouraging the next generation of apprentices to work, learn and earn.

“The backing for the week has been phenomenal. Thank you to everyone who got behind the campaign.

“This year’s campaign has shown that outdated views about the value of work-based learning are rapidly changing.

“Increasingly, employers are choosing apprenticeships as the best way to develop their workforce, improve productivity and grow their businesses, while the demand from individuals for opportunities continues to grow.

“Innovative new developments in the form of Foundation and Graduate Apprenticeships have been the catalyst for a real surge in interest in work-based learning.”

With the strong backing of the Scottish Government, Skills Development Scotland has supported industry to rapidly expand the number of opportunities available, supporting both the Scottish economy and individual ambitions.

Damien added: “Apprenticeships are fundamental to the Scottish economy, raising productivity and helping young people secure and develop great careers.

“Crucially, they are unique in driving productivity, supporting individual well-being as well as collective ambitions for economic growth.

“As we continue to support the work of the Enterprise and Skills Strategic Review Board, it’s increasingly clear that apprenticeships and work-based learning could have a disproportionate impact on the success of Scotland’s economy.”

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 will take place from 4 to 8 March.
