SDS has launched the Apprentice Greats initiative to recognise those who have made significant contributions to apprenticeships in Scotland.

Across the country, instructors, mentors, training providers, business owners and equality champions are among the many people supporting growth and diversity in apprenticeships.

The first inductees were the three joint winners of Scottish Apprenticeship Awards Apprentice Instructor of the Year category – Charlie Murphy of BAE systems, Kenny Stewart of FES Group and Jim Swan of GTG Training.

Jim McColl latest inductee

The latest inductee is former apprentice and global business leader, Jim McColl, who also employs apprentices across his businesses.

Jim McColl said: “My early career was influenced very strongly by my apprenticeship because, when I went to university, eventually, and then went back in to management positions, it put me in a very good position, having worked on the shop floor and experienced a lot of the jobs of the people that I was then supervising. I think that gave me a rich experience that, if I had just left and gone straight to university, I wouldn’t have had.”

Speaking of the investment his companies put into apprenticeships, Mr McColl said: “I would like to instil in these apprentices the same feeling that I had, which is, that people are there that want you to succeed and support you. As long as you are prepared to put in the work, we will do what we can to make you as successful as you want to be.”
