A new £20,000 bursary for people looking to change careers and become secondary school teachers in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) subjects is now live.

The bursary will be available for aspiring teachers in selected STEM subjects starting the one-year PGDE Initial Teacher Training course in Scotland this August.

It has been designed to help recruit educators for priority subjects in secondary schools and in 2018/19 the four qualifying subjects are maths, computing science, physics and technical education.

The bursary is in place to make it easier for individuals to transition from paid employment to education, and will be over and above any normal student support provided by SAAS, as long as students meet the SAAS eligibility criteria. There will be 100 bursaries available for the 2018/2019 intake and in subsequent years for the duration of the scheme.
