Hundreds of young people, parents, carers and teachers have visited the first Scottish Apprenticeship Show of 2017 in Glasgow.

The free event, taking place at the Royal Concert Hall, is a chance to talk to employers and apprentices, ask questions and get the right information about apprenticeships.

Along with information available at the events, hands-on activities are on offer to allow young people to get a greater insight into the knowledge and skills needed for an apprenticeship.

Parents and carers can also get involved and find out why an apprenticeship could be the right move for their children.

The Scottish Apprenticeship Show will travel to Edinburgh and Aberdeen in October.

Foundation Apprenticeships, Modern Apprenticeships and Graduate Level Apprenticeships are all available in Scotland.

There are more than 26,000 Modern Apprenticeship opportunities each year across Scotland covering hundreds of different job types.

Modern Apprenticeships provide young people with an opportunity to work, learn and earn.

New Foundation Apprenticeships mean pupils can benefit from work-based learning while still at school.

A Foundation Apprenticeship is taken over two years, usually starting when pupils are in fifth year at school, alongside other qualifications like Highers and National 5s.

But pupils will spend time away from school, at college and with an employer, so they get real, practical work experience and a recognised qualification.

Graeme Hendry, SDS Regional Partnership & Delivery Manger for Foundation Apprenticeships said: “Foundation Apprenticeships are a chance for pupils to get a head start on their careers by gaining an industry-recognised qualification, work on real projects and give themselves more options – all before they leave school.”

There are currently 10 different types, or frameworks, on offer through Foundation Apprenticeships, all of which have been identified as crucial areas in Scotland’s economy, from engineering to social care and healthcare.

What's next?

The Scottish Apprenticeship Show is at Edinburgh's EICC on October 1-2 and the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Aberdeen Treetops on October 10th.
