When Jasmine Greer heard about the Positive Futures Careers Fair in Perth she wasn’t sure was going to go along but it has lead to a Foundation Apprenticeship.

However, she was glad she did because it lead to a terrific work experience opportunity with  construction company Balfour Beatty.

St Johns RC Academy pupil Jasmine heard about the event through her school and was encouraged to  attend by her Mum asking: “What have you got to lose?”

The February event was organised by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), Perth and Kinross Council and the local Developing the Young Workforce group.

It  gave young people and their parents the opportunity to find out what options are available with local and national employers, training providers and at colleges and universities.

Jasmine said: “I really didn’t know what I wanted to do before I went along to the event. I had thought about going into teaching but I felt that even if I wasn’t going to leave school I should explore my options”.

The fourth year pupil met and talked to employers and got a better understanding of what it would be like to work in their industries.

A Balfour Beatty representative offered Jasmine work experience at their Perth base.

Jasmine jumped at the opportunity as she realised she had no real idea what a real workplace was like.

She visited Balfour Beatty sites, provided administrative support and took part in briefings and inductions.

Jasmine felt this gave her an insight in to the world of work, before making any decisions at school.

Now Jasmine has become a Business and Administration Foundation Apprentice and will continue to go to school while learning industry-recognised skills at Perth College UHI.

She said: “The Positive Futures Careers Fair helped me a lot. Speaking to employers gave me lots of ideas. I really am glad I went as the event has played a big part in helping me to decide what career I want in the future.

“I know I am just starting out but the Foundation Apprenticeship route seems perfect for me. I am looking forward to combining learning and experience at college and school.”

She added: “I am confident that I will be able to build links with employers which will help me plan the next steps in my career.”
