Iram Shafiq is employed at Hillfoot Nursery in Bearsden and is enjoying every part of her new role.

Former Hillhead High School pupil Iram has always wanted to work in childcare and this was confirmed during a work placement arranged by Barnardos.

"It made me sure that it was what I wanted to do because I enjoyed my experiences through voluntary work with children with autism as well as being a carer for my nine-year-old brother Kasim who also has autism,” explained Iram.

“I enjoy everything about my job, the staff at my workplace are friendly and I have built up a good rapport with them as well as the children and parents. My work experience helped me get on to this career path and built up my confidence."

Hillfoot Nursery currently has two Modern Apprentices and nine colleagues who look after 38 children.

Nursery manager Caroline McGarry said Hillfoot has always been very keen to support work placements and apprenticeships because it is vital for the childcare industry to give people the opportunity of practical hands-on experience.

“To work with children you need to have people who are enthusiastic, have confidence when they are communicating with children and who really want to do this kind of work and Iram has all of these qualities."

Sharon Taylor, business development manager of Hillfoot’s training provider, said: “The Childcare Management Company has worked with Caroline and the team at Hillfoot for a number of years in recruitment and provision of Modern Apprentices. I am sure Iram will learn, develop and enjoy her training and being part of the team there.”
