Young people and employers will be able to find out more about the benefits of apprenticeships and work-based learning at events across Scotland.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is working with employers, training providers and partners to co-ordinate events and activity throughout autumn.

SDS Director of National Training Programmes Katie Hutton said: “Apprenticeships allow individuals to earn a wage and gain industry-recognised qualifications, while supporting employers to develop a skilled workforce for the future.

Work-based learning

“With the introduction of Foundation Apprenticeships for young people at school and Graduate Level Apprenticeships there are even more opportunities for employers and individuals to benefit from work-based learning.”

For young people

Young people and their families can find out more about opportunities at the Scottish Apprenticeship Shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh (October).

Aimed at pupils from S2 to S4 and their families from the cities and surrounding areas, the shows provide the chance to meet apprentices and their employers to get hands-on experience of the opportunities available.

Partners and schools

Schools from the surrounding communities are encouraged to attend these events to find out more about the benefits of work based learning and to help inform their pupils when making choices about their future.

SDS is also working with a range of partners to support additional regional events promoting apprenticeships to young people in Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, Ayrshire, Forth Valley, Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and Bute and the Borders.

For employers

Employer events will run throughout September, for small and medium sized businesses who are interested in developing work-based learning programmes and apprenticeships.

SDS employer services staff will be on-hand to offer practical advice about the support and funding available to recruit apprentices.

Celebrating success

The Scottish Apprenticeship Awards in November recognise the achievements of individual employers and their apprentices.

International approach

The third Work-Based Learning Symposium – Maximising Return on Skills Investment – takes place in September and will bring together over 80 employers, academics and policy makers.
