Event helps SMEs better understand apprenticeships.

The value that apprenticeships can offer to small and medium sized enterprises was the focus of an event run as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

The Scottish Apprenticeship Advisory Board (SAAB) hosted the Understanding Apprenticeships session at Edrington in Glasgow.

The aim of was to debunk myths and tackle misconceptions of apprenticeships, specifically for SMEs who are thinking about recruiting apprentices into their business but not sure where to start.

The breakfast session opened with Graham Alexander from AJ Engineering, winners of the Federation of Small Businesses Scotland’s Employer of the Year 2019 award.

General Manager at AJ Engineering, Graham Alexander outlined his thoughts around one of the misconceptions – that it takes too long for smaller firms to get any real return on investment by taking on an apprentice:

‘’We find that when young apprentices come onboard, their enthusiasm, breeds enthusiasm...so their eagerness to learn encourages others to be eager to teach and so it’s a two-way process.

Graham Alexander, General Manager at AJ Engineering,

“I would say to SMEs who are not sure about taking on apprentices to go online and use the supporting tools to help identify a framework and then speak to a training provider who are there to help.’’

The breakfast event featured speakers from a variety of different SAAB member organisations, such as Robertson Group, Scottish Water and Balfour Beatty. The interactive workshop-based sessions allowed for questions by Scottish SMEs - from a variety of sectors including manufacturing, engineering, education and science amongst others – directly to employers.

Employer Services leads from SDS were also there to walk through the practical steps and support available when taking on apprentices and provide information on the different types of Foundation, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships that can benefit any business.
