Guarantee of education or training for every
16 to 19-year-old
Every 16 to 19-year-old in Scotland has a guaranteed offer of a
place in education or training from today, Minister for Youth
Employment Angela Constance has confirmed.
The pledge, the first time a government in Scotland has made
such a guarantee, was announced last year, and has been backed up
by an additional £30 million investment in employability projects
for young people.
Ms Constance, the only dedicated Minister for Youth Employment
in the UK, said:
"We know how damaging prolonged periods of unemployment can be
on our young people, particularly if they're unable to improve
their employability or skills or build their experience.
"My message to young people is this: if you are not currently in
education or have a training place, then help is available.
"Young people can find out more about opportunities in their
area and how to take advantage of them by contacting their local
Skills Development Scotland or JobCentre Plus offices.
"We have published a Youth Employment Strategy which covers a
range of activity across the public, private and voluntary sectors
and have started to roll out investment from the additional £30
million announced to back up this action.
"Securing a place in education or training will significantly
improve youth employment prospects for the longer term and I would
urge every 16 to 19-year-old in Scotland to take advantage of this
Damien Yeates, chief executive of Skills Development Scotland
"Every young person deserves a chance to get on the first step
of the career ladder. Skills Development Scotland, alongside its
key partners including Jobcentre Plus, DWP, local authorities and
Scotland's Colleges, stands ready to ensure that every young person
can get themselves started on a positive path into work."
